about the project
What is a musical legacy, anyway? For me it was intended to be a gift to family and friends; a memento of music to have for the future... a future that seems to include the loss of, among other things, my ability to sing. You see, I've always believed every day should be an adventure. Unfortunately my adventures have included 11 concussions, leaving me with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. CTE is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder caused by head trauma, that can have a profound effect on both memory and physiologic functions such as heart rhythm and coordination which includes breathing and vocal production.
Each song I chose for this collection was either requested or offered up as a personal gesture to family members and dear friends. They are memories made long ago, and hopefully kept alive through this offering. Some of my earliest memories are of my dad and me singing as we drove in the car during our biweekly visits; he and mom had divorced when I was three. We would sing a wonderful variety of songs from traditional Christmas tunes, (he insisted I learn the Latin version of “O Come All He Faithful”), Americana, folk songs by Pete Seger, Woody Guthrie and the like, and my favorites from The Great American Songbook. Music was a way for us to bond, celebrate and mourn. And so it is today. I will ever be grateful for his gift of song and for always encouraging me, as his father did for him, to use my voice to lift and soothe my heart and the hearts of others. What a joy to share one of those songs here with my son, Daxton. Blue Skies was, in fact, the first song he ever sang as a toddler. So fitting to save it for the next generation. |
